Preparing for successful breast surgery and recovery includes quitting smoking at least a month before surgery, and a month after surgery. Smoking impairs healing. You have made the investment in yourself and the reward will be improved self-esteem, confidence and quality of life. So, make the commitment to take time for healing to ensure you have the best outcome.
Recovery from breast augmentation surgery is no doubt uncomfortable for about a week. The amount of time you will need to heal depends on several factors including:
- Your health, and age
- whether the implants are placed above or behind the chest muscles
- the location of the incisions, and
- the size of the implants.
When you wake from surgery your breasts will be wrapped in dressings and you will find you are wearing an elastic bandage that will help to minimize swelling and provide support during healing. You will be instructed to wear your support garment 24/7 for long as your surgeon prescribes. You will receive complete post-operative instructions on how to clean your incisions, wear your support garment, instructions on massaging your breasts, what to expect and when to call your surgeon.
The first several days after surgery you will experience mild discomfort, and your activities will be restricted. Dr. Gupta will prescribe oral pain medication to take as needed; and antibiotics to prevent infection. The breasts may feel sore, tender and look bruised. These side effects are only temporary.
You will need to rest as much as possible after surgery, and Dr. Gupta will meet with you frequently during your recovery to check your healing progress, and advise you as to when you can return to work, school, exercise and other normal activities.
Most implant surgery will create an incision under the breast, and with this choice it is important to not lift your arms over your head for two to three weeks, and avoid strain in the upper body. Dr. Gupta will discuss this with you before surgery and provide you with explicit instructions for recovery and how to care for your incisions.
Size of the implant
During consultation or pre-op appointment, our staff will work with you to help determine the implant size you feel comfortable with. We have special sizing implants that you can try on in the office to visualize how you will look after surgery.
When you have the implants placed under the muscle, the muscle and the skin must stretch to accommodate the added volume. Larger implants require more time to allow the skin and muscle to accommodate.
Implants under the chest muscles or over
Under the chest muscle augmentation produces the most natural-looking results, but the procedure is more invasive because the surgeon must create a pocket under the muscle to contain the implant. For this procedure, you will need about a week away from work and about two weeks before engaging in all strenuous activity, including bending and heavy lifting. If you chose above the muscle placement, you will need about three days before returning to work.
You will see initial results almost immediately, and your breast shape and size will improve over time as the swelling subsides and your implants settle.
Fat transfer augmentation
Fat transfer augmentation is a less invasive alternative for breast augmentation. It uses your own fat taken by liposuction to enhance your breast size. This surgery requires only tiny incisions, and avoids the risks with implants.
It can take a week or so for bruising and swelling to resolve from liposuction; and 3-6 months for complete resolution. Initial recovery from fat transfer to the breasts will be approximately 1-3 days. You will be swollen, sore, tender and bruised. Over the next few weeks, any swelling and soreness will resolve. The complete healing process can take anywhere from six to twelve weeks.
Dr. Gupta will continue to observe you carefully during your healing process, and will advise you about when you can resume your normal daily activities. Full results are visible after approximately 6 months.
Everyone heals at different rates. Take time to heal well. Rest, eat healthy and plan for your new contours. This is an exciting time.
