Some women are born with larger or misshapen labia, or vaginal lips, while other women have labia that have been stretched out or elongated due to childbirth, aging or other factors. The resulting problem is not only cosmetic, but can cause a woman physical discomfort during intercourse or exercise or while wearing tight clothing. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that trims excess skin from the inner or outer labia for an improved vaginal appearance and better comfort. Dr. Anshu Gupta performs the labiaplasty procedure with precision to deliver beautiful results that boost a woman’s self-confidence and increase her ease of movement.
Am I a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?
You may be considered a good labiaplasty candidate if you:
- Are in good physical health
- Have large and/or uneven vaginal lips from aging or genetics
- Have stretched out vaginal lips from childbirth or weight loss
- Are self-conscious about your vulvar appearance
- Experience discomfort during intercourse, exercise or while wearing tight clothing
More about Labiaplasty Surgery
Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure that generally takes between one and two hours to complete. Dr. Gupta will begin the procedure by administering a mild oral sedative and local anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort. He will then trim excess skin and tissue from the inner or outer labia, after which he will close the incisions with dissolvable sutures. The patient will need to be driven home after surgery and have someone stay with them for the first 24 hours.
Recovering from Labiaplasty
There will be some bruising and swelling in the vaginal area for the first few days. There will also be some bleeding, so wearing a sanitary pad during this time is recommended. You may also experience some slight discomfort, most frequently while urinating, during this time; take the pain medication prescribed by Dr. Gupta for relief. Due to nerve endings being affected during the procedure, you may experience a numbing sensation in the vaginal area. This will usually subside after a couple of weeks, though it may take several months to disappear for some patients.
You should rest as much as possible for the first week after surgery to aid your body’s healing process. Avoid lifting or overexerting yourself during this time. You should also avoid wearing tampons and tight clothing on your lower body, both of which may cause irritation and increase the risk of infection in the vaginal area. Most labiaplasty patients are able to return to work after the first week, but should refrain from sexual intercourse and exercise for at least four weeks.
