Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue caused by a hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. It can be corrected with male breast reduction surgery, which removes excess glandular tissue and fat for a flatter, more masculine chest.

The Procedure

Here’s what you can expect during your gynecomastia procedure.

  • You’ll be fully asleep under general anesthesia in either a hospital or surgery center. Before surgery begins, Dr. Gupta will carefully mark your chest to guide his incision placement.

  • Most patients receive a small incision around the edge of the areola (peri-areolar). If there is significant excess skin, Dr. Gupta may use an inverted-T or inframammary incision to remove and tighten the skin.

  • Excess glandular breast tissue is removed through the incision. Liposuction is also performed through the same opening to refine and smooth the chest contour for the most natural-looking result.

  • Incisions are closed in multiple layers for strength and optimal healing. One small surgical drain is placed on each side to prevent fluid buildup, and waterproof dressings are applied.

  • You’ll be fitted with a compression vest to help reduce swelling and support your new chest shape. Compression is typically worn for 4–6 weeks during recovery.

Grades of Gynecomastia

There are several levels of gynecomastia. Depending on the amount of breast tissue and the grade of gynecomastia you have, Dr. Gupta will evaluate your case and recommend the most effective surgical solution and technique to achieve the best results for you.

 FAQs

  • Gynecomastia develops when there is an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels, causing excess breast tissue growth in men. This can be influenced by puberty, aging, medications, medical conditions, or hormonal changes.

  • In some cases, especially during puberty, mild gynecomastia may resolve without treatment. However, long-standing or more severe cases usually require surgical correction for lasting results.

  • While losing weight and building chest muscle can improve appearance, true gynecomastia caused by glandular tissue cannot be eliminated by diet or exercise alone. Surgery is the only definitive solution.

  • Yes — once the excess glandular tissue is removed, it will not grow back unless there are significant hormonal changes, weight gain, or certain medications that trigger new growth.

  • Most patients return to light activities within a week and resume exercise in about 4–6 weeks. Swelling and mild discomfort are common at first but improve steadily with proper aftercare and compression.
