What is Ear Surgery?
Ear surgery includes procedures that reshape, reposition, or repair the ears to improve appearance, balance, or function. At our practice, we offer two common types of ear surgery:
Otoplasty (Ear Pinning): This procedure corrects prominent or protruding ears by reshaping the cartilage and bringing the ears closer to the head for a more natural appearance. It’s commonly performed on both children and adults who feel self-conscious about their ear shape.
Earlobe Repair: This quick procedure restores stretched, torn, or damaged earlobes often caused by heavy earrings, gauges, or trauma. Earlobe repair reshapes and closes the opening, allowing the ear to heal naturally and, if desired, be re-pierced later.
Both procedures are typically performed under local anesthesia with minimal downtime and are designed to help you feel more confident and comfortable with your appearance.
Why get Ear Surgery?
-
Otoplasty reshapes the ears to reduce prominence and create a more natural, balanced appearance.
-
Earlobe repair fixes damage caused by trauma, heavy earrings, or gauges, restoring normal shape and function.
-
Repairing damaged earlobes or correcting ear shape can reduce irritation and improve the fit of glasses or headphones.
-
Many patients feel more comfortable and confident with the improved look of their ears after surgery.
Otoplasty
Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning surgery, is a procedure that reshapes or repositions the ears to create a more balanced and natural appearance.
The Procedure
Here’s what you can expect during your otoplasty procedure.
-
Otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's age and surgical plan.
-
Incisions are typically hidden behind the ear, within the natural crease where the ear meets the head.
-
Dr. Gupta reshapes or folds the ear cartilage using internal sutures to reposition the ears closer to the head for a more natural appearance.
-
Non-dissolvable sutures may be placed internally to help maintain the new ear shape and position long-term.
-
Incisions are closed with fine sutures, and a compression dressing or head wrap is applied to support healing and reduce swelling.
-
This is an outpatient surgery. Most patients return to normal activities in about 5–7 days. A headband may be worn at night for several weeks to protect the ears.

Ear Lobe Repair
Earlobe repair is a quick surgical procedure that restores torn, stretched, or split earlobes to a natural, symmetrical shape.
The Procedure
Here’s what you can expect during your Ear Lobe Repair procedure.
-
This is a quick, outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia.
-
Dr. Gupta carefully marks the area based on the type of tear, stretching, or hole that needs to be repaired.
-
The damaged or stretched tissue is excised to create fresh edges for a clean repair.
-
The earlobe is carefully closed with fine, layered sutures to ensure a smooth contour and minimal scarring.
-
The incision is covered with a small dressing. Sutures are usually removed after 5–7 days. Most patients return to daily activities immediately.
-
The earlobe can be re-pierced after full healing, usually at around 6–8 weeks post-op.
