Eyes That Look Well-Rested and Rejuvenated. The eyebrow and forehead area can develop subtle changes over time that contribute to a tired, sad or angry expression. For example, the brow line can start to sag, the central portion of the brow can droop, or the forehead or area between the eyebrows can wrinkle. Brow lift, also known as forehead lift, is a procedure to raise a saggy/droopy brow line and smooth wrinkles between the eyebrows and on the forehead. This produces a more alert and attractive facial expression. If you are self-conscious of a saggy brow line, or are bothered by noticeable wrinkles around your brows and forehead, please contact board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Anshu Gupta of Verve Plastic Surgery for more information.
Am I a Candidate for Brow Lift?
You may be a suitable candidate for brow lift if you have a naturally saggy or droopy brow line that sits close to your eyes and/or have frown lines (i.e., deep furrows between your eyebrows). Ideally, candidates are in good physical and psychological health, do not smoke and do not have any chronic diseases or medical conditions that could increase the risks of surgery. If you are considering brow lift, you should have specific and reasonable expectations of the surgery and understand the possible (but rare) risk of complications.
Brow Lift Surgery Details
Brow lift is typically performed on an outpatient basis at a surgical center or a hospital. Anesthesia is administered so you remain comfortable during the procedure.
In most cases, the brow line incisions are made behind the hairline to conceal any scarring. Through the incisions, the forehead skin is lifted and repositioned, and the muscles that cause frown lines are weakened. Wrinkled forehead tissue is also smoothed for a tighter and more youthful result. Finally, the incisions are closed with small sutures and the area is bandaged.
Depending on how your eye area has aged, you might want to combine brow lift with another facial plastic procedure. For example, if your eyelids have thin, crepe paper-like skin that droops over the upper lids or causes puffiness under the lower lids, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may be beneficial.
Also, if other areas of your face, such as your cheeks, chin and jawline, have started to sag with aging, and you have lost the youthful contours you once enjoyed, you might want to consider more comprehensive rejuvenation with facelift surgery.
Dr. Gupta would be happy to review these options with you in greater detail during a consultation.
Recovering from Brow Lift
It is normal to experience mild to moderate swelling, bruising, numbness and/or tightness right after brow lift surgery. Cold compresses can help control swelling and oral medication can soothe any discomfort (pain is uncommon after brow lift).
For the first week or so after surgery, rest as much as possible so your body can heal. Avoid any strenuous activities, including heavy lifting, and sleep with your head elevated.
Keep in mind that every patient recovers at a different pace, and it’s important to listen to your own body. Most patients are back to their normal activity level within a month.
