A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a plastic surgery procedure to remove excess abdominal skin and fat, tighten lax abdominal muscles, and remove stretch marks to restore your figure after pregnancy or major weight loss.
A tummy tuck is performed in the hospital or an outpatient surgery center, under general anesthesia, or IV sedation.
A full tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision that typically runs from hip to hip, but the extent of the incision depends on the amount of excess skin. The incision is placed low enough that any scarring can be concealed by underwear or a bathing suit. This incision is used to treat the area between the pubic hairline and the belly button. When there is excess skin in the upper abdomen, a second incision will be made around the belly button as a new position of the belly button is always required.
Tightening weak and separated muscles
The horizontal abdominal muscles are pulled together to close the gap and are sutured together. Rectus abdominis muscles are tightened. These muscles run vertically. Splitting of the two rectus muscles is common after pregnancy to accommodate a growing belly. Referred to as rectus diastasis. Dr. Gupta can also repair any hernia that a patient has.
Removing the excess skin
The skin of the upper abdomen is pulled down and trimmed to meet the incision at the public hairline, and the incision is sutured. Then a new opening for the belly button will be created through which the belly button is inserted. The circular incision is sutured and holds the belly button in position. All incisions are closed with sutures, tapes, clips and adhesives.
You may have drainage tubes under the skin for a few days, to remove excess fluids. These will be removed during your post-op appointment.
If there is excess fat on the hips, thighs, or love handles, or covering your six-pack, liposuction will be a planned part of your total body contouring. Liposuction will improve your body contours in combination with your tummy tuck. When liposuction is planned, small incisions will be hidden in normal body creases where a cannula will be inserted to remove the excess fat.
You will receive pain medication and instructions on caring for your drains and dressings. It is essential that you follow Dr. Gupta’s instructions to assure proper healing, and a great result.
