Eyelid Surgery in Solana Beach
A Rested, Refreshed Expression
A common side effect of aging is significant laxity of the skin around the eyes (particularly on the eyelids). This causes skin on the upper lids to hang over the eyelashes and obscure the natural folds of the eyelids; it also causes puffiness on the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery is helpful for eliminating surplus skin and “opening up” the eyes so they look awake and rested.
Dr. Anshu Gupta is the eyelid surgeon Solana Beach patients trust to deliver beautiful and natural-looking results. His meticulous approach is valuable when working with such a delicate area of the face. Even a minor tweak can influence the outcome, so Dr. Gupta’s perfectionist tendencies are properly suited to eyelid surgery.
Candidates for Eyelid Surgery
You may be a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery if you:
- Have loose, hanging skin on the upper eyelids
- Obscured vision due to overhanging eyelids
- Puffiness/bags/dark circles under the lower eyelids
You should be in stable health, not smoke and not have any uncontrolled health or eye problems that could increase the surgical risks. It’s also important that you understand the possible outcomes of the procedure and have reasonable expectations of surgery.
Dr. Gupta will meet with you to discuss your candidacy and the procedure in greater detail. He will examine your eyelids, noting the quality of your skin and the degree of correction necessary. Dr. Gupta will draw up a treatment plan to address your specific needs, and he will provide information about what to expect on the day of surgery. He will also advise how to prepare and plan for your recovery.
More about the Procedure
Eyelid surgery can be performed in our Solana Beach plastic surgery practice. Anesthesia medications will be used to prevent you from feeling any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Dr. Gupta will begin by making the surgical incisions on the eyelids. If he is treating the upper lids, he will make the incision within the natural fold of the lids (this prevents any noticeable post-operative scarring). If he is treating the lower lids, he will place the incision either inside the lower lid or just under the lashes, where it is easily concealed.
Through the incision(s), Dr. Gupta will remove excess tissue and skin, and redistribute fat if necessary. He will also correct muscle laxity. In some cases, he can use a laser to resurface the skin around the eyes for a wrinkle-smoothing effect. Finally, Dr. Gupta will tighten the remaining skin and close the incisions with sutures.
Recovering from Eyelid Surgery
After eyelid surgery, it’s common to experience swelling, bruising, tearing and light sensitivity as the eyes heal. The side effects will subside over time. Cold compresses or ice packs can help to reduce post-operative swelling, and oral medication will be prescribed for any discomfort. You must avoid any strenuous activities, bending, heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for several weeks.
Dr. Gupta will advise you regarding how to care for the incisions and bandages, whether you need to take antibiotics and the warning signs of a possible (rare) complication. He will schedule several follow-up visits to check on your healing progress. Dr. Gupta will recommend when to return to work, exercise and your normal routine.
