Male Breast Reduction in North San Diego County
A Flatter, Firmer and More Masculine-Looking Chest Contour
Gynecomastia is a term used to describe enlarged male breasts. It may be the result of hormone imbalance, certain medications or obesity, and often causes deep feelings of shame or embarrassment. Verve Plastic Surgery is a safe and judgment-free space for men suffering from gynecomastia. Our compassionate plastic surgeon, Dr. Anshu Gupta, has helped many men enjoy a more classically masculine-looking chest and greater confidence, thanks to male breast reduction.
Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
You may be a suitable candidate for male breast reduction if you have excessive fatty/glandular breast tissue. You might shy away from intimacy or refrain from participating in sports or exercise because you are embarrassed by oversized breasts.
To qualify for surgery, you should be:
- Physically and psychologically healthy/stable
- Free of any chronic or uncontrolled medical conditions that could raise the surgical risks
- Smoke-free, or able to quit prior to surgery
- Educated about the surgery and potential outcomes
- Realistic about your goals of surgery
Dr. Gupta will meet with you individually to examine your chest, review your medical history and talk about your cosmetic goals related to plastic surgery. It is at this time that he will determine whether you are a suitable candidate and, if so, how he plans to approach your case.
The goal of the consultation is to educate you about the procedure and lay out a proposed treatment plan. If you decide to schedule your surgery, you will receive detailed instructions to prep for your procedure and plan for recovery.
Male breast reduction (gynecomastia surgery) is performed on an outpatient basis at a hospital or surgery center. This allows you to recover in the comfort of your own home the night of your procedure.
Anesthesia medications will be used so you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout surgery.
In many cases, enlarged breasts are the result of excess fatty tissue, and can be treated by liposuction techniques alone. Dr. Gupta will make several small incisions on the breasts and insert a small, thin cannula to break up the fatty tissue. Then, he will use gentle suction to remove the fat.
In cases where the breasts have surplus glandular tissue and skin, Dr. Gupta will perform an additional step: surgical excision. The incision pattern will vary by patient, depending on the particular case.
If needed, Dr. Gupta can also reduce enlarged areolas and reposition the nipple higher on the breast.
Recovering from Male Breast Reduction
The chest area will be sore and swollen after surgery. A compression garment may be placed to help control swelling and support the new chest contour as it heals.
You need to rest your body properly and refrain from bending, lifting and exercise. Any pain or discomfort can be treated with oral pain medication as prescribed by Dr. Gupta.
He will regularly meet with you during your recovery to ensure your breasts are healing properly, answer any questions and advise when to resume work, exercise and normal activities.
You should notice a flatter and firmer chest contour almost immediately after surgery, with results improving as you heal and the swelling subsides.
