Body Lift Surgery
What can a Body Lift do for me?
We appreciate that you have given us the opportunity to explain how a body lift can help you get the look you desire.
Those patients that have lost a large amount of weight through bariatric surgery (such as gastric bypass or lap band surgery), diet and exercise or post pregnancy, may be left with excess skin on their body. Dr. Gupta would like to congratulate all those individuals that have taken these very important steps towards improving their lifestyle and health. Many people still find it difficult to fit into smaller sizes of clothing due to the excess skin left being or they find that the skin causes chafing and discomfort. Dr. Gupta offers a special approach to post weight loss body contouring to help patients achieve the look they desire.
Body lifts (Belt Lipectomy), involves lifting multiple areas of the body. Large weight loss leads to folds of loose/inelastic skin that is resistant to reduction even with diet or exercise. This skin excess thus must be removed surgically. Our very skilled surgeon, Dr. Anshu Gupta uses the most advanced techniques in body lifts to improve body appearance including recontouring of arms, thighs, buttocks, tummy tuck, back rolls and any other areas requiring attention. It removes skin and fat and the remaining skin is tightened.
Dr. Anshu Gupta has extensive experience in the latest body lift techniques to help ensure a successful outcome with minimal post-surgical scarring. The result of the surgery is a slimmer, firmer, more contoured body.
Post-surgical, scar tissue will be left in areas where the skin was removed. Every attempt will be made to conceal the scar as much as possible. Dr. Gupta employs the latest treatments techniques for scar treatment to minimize scar formation. You will feel discomfort, however Dr. Gupta will provide the appropriate pain medication to keep you comfortable. Swelling, bruising and soreness are normal progression towards healing and may persist for a month or more post-surgically.
The entire procedure may be done in one shot or may occur over several days. Staging will be done if it will improve results and minimize risks.
Although the results of a body lift are instant, the final results can only fully be appreciated once the swelling has faded. You will receive specific recovery instructions that generally involve several days of rest and an additional period of avoiding strenuous activities.

The Body Lift Process
1. The Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Gupta will determine if you are a good candidate for a body lift. Ideal candidates are those who have undergone bariatric surgery, have recently had a baby with excess/loose skin remaining.
Understanding your goals is of top priority. Dr Anshu Gupta will discuss the patient’s medical history, as well as goals for body lift surgery to make sure they maintain reasonable expectations. He will interject his thoughts, from both a scientific and artistic perspective. Together with you, he will formulate a treatment plan that is right for you. He will also explain the entire body lift procedure in detail and answer any questions or concerns patients may have.
Dr. Gupta takes a holistic approach to body lifts — enhancing your overall contours and ensuring that the result is harmonious with the entire body. At the end of this consult, you will feel empowered with information as all of your questioned will be answered.
It is natural to be nervous about any medical procedure. It is Dr. Gupta’s goal to make you feel calm and confident about the next steps of your upcoming body lift. The doctors and staff are devoted to warmly attending to each of our patient’s needs.
2. Your commitment
During your consultation, Dr Gupta wishes to learn about your true expectations. You must fully disclose your health history (including medications, use of vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drug use. You must commit fully to following all of Dr. Gupta’s instructions. Your commitment, including a positive outlook and maintaining good overall health, will greatly impact the results of your body contouring surgery.
3. Surgery Day
Body lifts can be performed in either an ambulatory surgical facility or a hospital. You may be asked to stay overnight. This procedure is most commonly performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Gupta and the team will full attend to maintaining your comfort and safety.
During the procedure, Dr. Gupta will create incisions in the appropriate areas that are marked prior to surgery. He will suction out extra fat deposits, and the muscles will be pulled together for a more contoured appearance. Dr. Gupta will then pull the skin taut and remove the excess skin. The incisions will then be sutured and the patient will be fitted with a compression garment to facilitate healing.
All patients must avoid taking aspirin (or anti-inflammatory drugs) for at least 10 days prior to breast augmentation surgery. This is because such medications may induce blood-thinning. Patients who smoke are also asked to stop for at least two weeks prior to the procedure — because smoking complicates the healing process.
On the morning of your procedure doctors recommend that you wear loose-fitting clothing, and make some arrangement for transportation home after surgery. Further instructions will be provided during consultations.
4. Recovery and Results
After your procedure is completed, Dr. Gupta will apply dressings/bandages which may be elastic to aid in reduction of swelling and support your new contours as the healing process occurs. He may also temporarily place one or more small, then tubes under the skin to allow drainage of excess fluid or blood. You will be given post-operative instructions including how to care for the surgical sites/drains, medications to apply or take orally, signs to look for at the surgical site or in overall health and when to return for a follow up appointment with Dr. Gupta.
Daily activities will be restricted in the beginning. You should avoid bending, straining or lifting for several days. If you have undergone tightening of the abdomen or thighs, Dr. Gupta will recommend that you avoid standing fully upright and elevate your knees while sleeping to avoid placing stress on internal sutures. It is important to follow all post op instructions as this is essential to a favorable outcome.
Initially, swelling will occur as part of normal healing. Discomfort is also normal and will be controlled with medication. Dr. Gupta will request begin walking as soon as possible, the next day post-surgery to minimize the risk of developing a blood clot or other complication. Within about 2 weeks following surgery, a return to light, normal activity is possible as soon as you feel ready. You will be ready to return to work and normal activity in a 3-4 weeks, as long as you do not engage in any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise.
Over the next several weeks, your healing will continue, swelling will resolve and incision lines will continue to improve. It is important to protect your incisions from the sun until the healing process is complete.
Although the results of a body lift are visible almost immediately, it may take several months to fully appreciate your final results as swelling resolves. Numbness and a firm feeling over the skin’s surface will resolve over time. It may take a year or more for incisions lines to refine and fade to some degree. Although permanent, these lines are placed in well concealed areas and can usually be hidden by most clothing and swimsuits.
Although as your body ages, it is natural to lose some firmness, your new uplifted body contours should be long lasting provided that you maintain your weight and general fitness.

The body lift surgery itself is pain free, as some form of anesthesia will be used. Post-surgical discomfort may last somewhere between 7-14 days and varies in severity from patient to patient. We will make every effort to keep you comfortable with clear post-operative instructions, pain relievers and muscle relaxants prescribed by Dr. Gupta.
